Our Story
Kubin’s Furniture & Mattresses is in a historic corner building on highway M-46 in St. Louis, Michigan. When in the Mid-Michigan area, it is worth a visit to see one of Michigan’s most unique furniture stores for yourself!
The store was founded in 1978 by George Kubin as a sleep shop. It is now owned by George and Winnie Kubin. The Kubins want their store to stand out from other furniture stores. We take pride in having the largest recliner and chair display in the state with over 200 chairs in our collection. In many cases you can find your recliner and take it home today, no ordering and waiting is necessary!
We proudly serve the areas of Saint Louis, Breckenridge, Alma, Shepherd, Elwell, Merrill, Ithaca, Midland, Mount Pleasant and Vestaburg in Michigan.
Colonial Theatre
The Martin Opera House was built in 1876 on this location. It was the first Opera House in Gratiot County. Henry Martin was a civil war soldier in the Ohio Volunteer Infantry.
In 1909, after the fire partially destroyed the original building, Henry Martin and other interested citizens built the present brick structure on the corner of Mill Street and Washington. It was named the Colonial Theatre.
The opera house was on the second floor. The main entry of the theater was a stairway at the back of Washington Street, with a landing and ticket booth two-thirds of the way up. The second story was used for a temporary school when St. Louis High School burned in 1932.
The building has been occupied over the years by Vliet's (1913-1920), Young's (1920-1947), Bennet's (1947-1974), McKim's (1974-1988), as department stores. Kubin's (1988-present) now operate a furniture store on this key corner of downtown St. Louis.
Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2014, Downtown St. Louis is a quaint, picturesque place that is the focal point of the city and is home to many community events.
In addition to the businesses, downtown still has the town's key features including St. Louis High School, Clapp Park and the W.T. Morris Memorial Swimming Pool.
The downtown is truly part of a safe, walkable neighborhood, as the business district is surrounded by residential homes. You can see a nice selection of Victorian homes, especially along M-46 including the magnificent Elwell Castle on the corner of M-46 and Delaware Street.
